EQC: 80% Reduction in Test Effort with Tricentis Tosca

How Resync helped the Earthquake Commission reduce a 6–8 week regression cycle to under one week — while achieving near-100% test coverage.

Background

The Earthquake Commission (Toka Tū Ake EQC) implemented a new version of their Claim Management Software (CMS) to support its response to natural disaster insurance for residential homes, land, and contents across Aotearoa New Zealand.

EQC adopted an Agile methodology for software development and delivery, enabling monthly releases to support the business — which created an acute testing challenge. The existing approach of manually running a subset of tests was high-risk: defects that slipped through affected real customers at some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

Monthly release cadence

Agile delivery required testing to complete within a sprint window. A 6–8 week manual cycle was incompatible with monthly releases — forcing EQC to choose between speed and coverage.

1,000+ manual test cases

The volume of regression tests needed for each CMS release made full manual execution impractical. EQC accepted risk on every release by running only a subset.

Near-100% coverage was impossible manually

Claims management software defects directly affect customers in distress. The coverage gap between what was needed and what manual testing could deliver was unacceptable — but seemed unavoidable.

The Challenge

EQC had over 1,000 manual test cases required to ensure adequate coverage for each monthly release. Manually executing this full suite was impractical within Agile sprint cycles, forcing EQC to run a high-risk subset of tests and accept the resulting coverage gap.

The business needed a way to achieve full regression coverage on a monthly cadence — without sacrificing delivery speed or adding significant headcount.

Resync's Approach

Resync reviewed EQC's full suite of manual test cases and designed an automated equivalent using Tricentis Tosca — mirroring the coverage required across the CMS product. The suite was built to run end-to-end without compromising quality or jeopardising delivery timelines.

Resync structured the automation framework to align with EQC's DevOps objectives, enabling a continuous testing model as new releases were delivered. Tricentis Tosca was selected for its model-based approach, resilience to UI change, and fit with EQC's enterprise testing environment.

Results

The automated suite delivered outcomes that were genuinely impossible to achieve manually — transforming EQC's approach to regression testing across every release cycle.

80% reduction in test effort

Testing that previously required 6–8 weeks of manual effort now completes in under one week with the automated suite running end-to-end across CMS.

Near-100% regression coverage

EQC now has confidence that each release has been thoroughly tested — coverage that was previously impossible to achieve within sprint timelines.

Continuous testing model enabled

The automated suite aligns with EQC's DevOps objectives, running on each release cycle and growing as new functionality is delivered.

Ongoing Resync partnership

Resync continues as EQC's automation partner, enhancing the test suite as new functionality is delivered to the CMS platform.
